Career
counselors and coaches are being challenged more than ever by the technology of
our times; the internet, distance counseling and more. These challenges have lead
to new guidelines. Do you know the guidelines to protect your clients
and yourself? Join us for a presentation that will provide you with the opportunity
to learn about upcoming changes to the Ethics Code of the National Career Development
Association (NCDA), the practice of distance career counseling, and the impact
that putting personal information in the public domain (through websites and online
social networks) may have on your work with clients. This
presentation will be conducted by David M. Reile, PhD. David is the chair
of NCDAs Ethics Committee and a long time member of MAC/LPN. He provided
guidance and leadership on developing the current ethics standards for NCDA and
is co-author of the NCDA Career Development Facilitators Manual. David is
a licensed psychologist, National Certified Career Counselor, and Master Career
Counselor with 20 years of education and experience in career planning and psychological
consultation. Through his current company, Career Development Alliance, LLC, David
has been actively involved in the design and development of career coaching and
counseling programs. Among his many projects, David has created and administered
a state-of-the-art, distance-based career coaching program for 45,000+ Federal
employees. He will describe this program along with detailing the various ethical
considerations involved in distance-based counseling.
Review
of Meeting: Report
of Program on February 2, 2007
Ethics,
Distance Career Counseling, And Information in the Public Domain MAC/LPN
was fortunate to be able to present Dr. David M. Reile, chair of the National
Career Development Association's (NCDA) Ethics Committee and Master Career Counselor
with 20 years of education and experience in counseling and career development.
Dr. Reile gave us an overview of the work of NCDA's Ethics Committee and the issues
the committee had to address; confidentiality; dual relationships; recording keeping
and the law; and the rules and regulations of the Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and how it affects counselors. Dr. Reile stressed
the need for transparency with clients regarding record keeping, insurance reporting,
supervision reporting, and need for maintaining the counseling relationship. There
is a HIPAA disclosure form which would be useful in handing this issue. Dr. Reile
began his discussion of distance counseling by describing a career counseling
model his company has been using with a government agency and how they approached
several issues. We also discussed new technology such as Facebook.com, MySpace.com
and other like websites that are being used as new ways of communicating. The
presentation was highly participatory, and the audience was very complimentary.
The subjects covered were important and timely, and we hope to follow-up with
similar topics for future meetings.
