Hand-Me-Down
Dreams: Integrating Family
Influences into Career Counseling & Coaching
By Mary Jacobsen, author of Hand-Me-Down Dreams:
How Families Influence Our Career Paths
|
 |
How does each generation
teach the next about work? How does what parents think they are
teaching differ from what children actually learn? And how do these
early family lessons show up in an individual's later career development?
Mary Jacobsen, uses concepts
from family systems theory to describe how family expectations about
work are passed on to each new generation -- often in subtle and
indirect ways that disguise the family's influence and make it difficult
to detect and alter. These inherited aspirations -- or "hand-me-down
dreams" -- affect not only career selection, but also relationships
and behavior on the job. Mary draws from family histories that she
has encountered in her coaching and therapy practice as well as
workshops she has led on this topic over the past eight years. Participants
will learn four "systemic" interventions to use with individual
clients. Format includes case examples, Q&A, and an interactive
exercise in pairs using a family history interview protocol.
